This is a school-based PGCE course for Early Years specialists keen to focus on the 3-7 age range. Though trainees will qualify to teach across the primary age range (5-11) the programme is designed to meet the specific needs of teachers of this younger age group which spans pre-school, reception and Key Stage 1.

This course has been developed by a National Leader of Education (NLE) colleague and is offered in Exeter, in partnership with Bath Spa University (Ofsted Outstanding Provider) and South West Teacher Training (SWTT). Trainees spend almost all of their time in school on placement, beginning in September at the Home School in Exeter. This is where you will be based for most of the time you are training, and here you will develop an understanding of how schools are organised and some of the challenges they face from the start of the year.

The autumn and summer terms are spent on placement in the Home School working with experienced colleagues in class, while in the spring term you move to another setting to work with a different age group.

Training for teaching is provided by experienced current practitioners in Early Years settings across the city during the course of the year. Throughout the programme an on-line course with Masters credits is delivered by the University and one day each week is typically allowed to follow this from home.

Taster sessions for our Primary (5-11) and Early Years (3-7) PGCE programmes are held in member schools, and you are warmly invited to come along to meet colleagues and discuss your plans. These events take place on a regular basis so please email or call 01392 927171 for more information.
