Why train with us? ITT
Exeter Consortium is a partnership of schools in Exeter in South West England, established and managed by the schools themselves. It offers an exceptional opportunity to learn to teach in local schools with outstanding providers. The attractive setting of an historic regional capital at the heart of one of the most desirable areas of the country makes this an irresistible location to live and learn in. Our partner training organisations are South West Teacher Training and Bath Spa University both highly regarded by Ofsted.
The well-established excellence in teacher training in Exeter has come from a commitment across our member schools and partners over the years to offer high quality training programmes and a diverse range of really supportive learning environments in our schools. Many years of experience have seen the development of a learning culture in our schools which values, supports and prioritises the needs of trainees and which has produced a consistently high level of outstanding teachers.
There is a mixture of schools and settings in our Consortium, with a range of secondary schools, over 60 primaries, a special school and FE College across the city. The secondary schools are newly rebuilt to a high standard, while Exeter College provides post 16 education across the city. The primaries offer a very wide range of sizes and locations, from small schools of less than 100 pupils up to rolls of more than 600, and from inner-city sites to the urban fringe - and beyond to surrounding small villages. Exeter is relatively compact and trainees can easily engage with all of the schools across the city conveniently, without having to make long journeys.

Choosing the right teaching pathway can be a daunting experience, however once someone recommended I contact Exeter Consortium, the whole experience changed. They were incredibly informative, encouraging and simply friendly! Within minutes of being in the office, I knew it was the right course for me. Being part of a smaller cohort means that they get to know you on a personal basis, they are genuinely interested in helping you progress through the ITT year, providing not only emotional support, but providing exemplary additional seminars and valuable CPD. I would recommend the course to any prospective ITT candidate.
The Exeter Consortium and its schools have an outstanding track record in CPD and staff development and value the opportunity to prepare the next generation of teachers for their schools. The aim is to provide the best possible educational outcomes for all of Exeter’s children. Many of the teachers are excellent practitioners who regularly contribute to our various popular CPD programmes, and are keen to share their expertise with future colleagues. The outstanding success of teacher training in Exeter is clear affirmation of their vision and hard work!
The process of searching for PGCE/SCITT Providers was appearing really daunting but when I came across PGCE
SD@Exeter I felt it really had something to offer that was different from all the rest. It fuses the School Direct aspect of working in a school with the PGCE academic side. This is the balance that I was looking for and so far I’m really enjoying my experience. One of the best attributes of the course is the fact that you have a ‘home school’ meaning that from day one you are integrated into a school and not out on a limb. It means that you learn so much more about setting up a classroom ready for the beginning of the year and then following that through to the end. I also love that we are given the opportunity to place the academic learning alongside direct experience more often. I feel that by the end of the course I will not just be more prepared for the NQT year but that I will also be better equipped for it. It’s really exciting to be a part of something innovative and I’m really pleased to be a member of the first cohort, I definitely made the right choice!
CURRENT TRAINEE
We are fortunate enough to have someone who is extremely wise and inspiring to lead our Schools Direct group.
The support and advice from my university tutor and my class teacher has been invaluable. Being in schools from day one allowed us to build up a rapport with the pupils and staff which proved very helpful. CURRENT TRAINEE
This is the best group of ITT students we have ever had, both in terms of the relationships they have built with the school
and the quality of the trainees. DEPUTY HEAD TEACHER
